Canada Post Lettermail - Shippable Items

The following items are considered "non-mailable" and can not be shipped through any Canada Post shipping service (Lettermail or Parcel):

  • Prohibited items - contents are explosive, highly flammable, radioactive or dangerous
  • Illegal items
  • Adult material (unless sent in an opaque envelope with the words “ADULT MATERIAL”)
  • Precious Metals (acceptable with written permission from Canada Post)

Standard Lettermail - Limitations
Although Canada Post does not have a comprehensive list of allowable items, they do set the criteria for what cannot be shipped through Standard Lettermail, and therefore is acceptable to be shipped as Non-standard / Oversized Lettermail:

  • Bottle caps
  • Loose coins
  • Foodstuffs
  • Glass
  • Jewelry
  • Keys
  • Liquids
  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Powders
  • Seeds
  • Anything fragile or perishable

  •  USA Lettermail Restrictions
It is important to note that all USA packages that are anything other than paper or paper products require a USA customs declaration, and consumer products technically can not be sent USA Lettermail.

Canada Post employees are trained and receive monthly reminders, and will more often than not reject consumer products trying to be sent by USA Lettermail at the counter.

You can always drop your package off at a drop-box. If you can avoid manual inspection throughout the shipping process the better your odds of your package making it. But note that if your package is caught and determined to not be reported correctly, US Customs reserves the right to not return your package, and send it off to be destroyed.

    International Lettermail Restrictions
Each country will have its own restriction list, please research each countries restriction list, and mail at your own risk.
